Guest Blog: Power Dressing with a (Toddler) Twist

When it comes to dressing up for office, most men and women oscillate between the following 3-point scale: ‘Anything washed and ironed’ to ‘Love to dress up’ to ‘Obsessed about my office look’. I have actually been through all these stages depending upon the life stage that I was in.

However, now things have taken a toddler-twist. My daughter, who is now 1.5 years old, eats up my morning hours like one of her chewy toys. She is an early to bed – early to rise person and before I open my eyes in the morning, she is already up in the bed talking to herself. A well-rested baby is nothing short of a Red Bull mascot. Going out and seeing off the school buses, taking two rounds of the swing park, catching her favorite morning show on TV, refusing to eat breakfast or to come out of the bath or to get dressed are just some of the things that I must do with her before heading out for office.

This is how I power dress for office now –

  • On days when she is cranky, the top on the clothes pile with the unfolded jeans from a day before. If that top is ironed, it can only indicate that good things do happen!
  • On days when she is busy playing by herself, I lay down my clothes on the bed to admire my pairing sense. That is before she pulls them from the bed and tries to get herself entangled in them.
  • On days when she finds a new toy or a book and doesn’t care about my existence, I wear matching accessories and even brush my hair.
  • On other baby-as-usual days, I only focus on clothes that will magically make me look thinner as trip to the gym looks years away going by the current morning routines that I have.

Managing work and a baby is as tough as it can get. I have been lucky that my parents have been sacrificing their retired lives to look after my daughter and my in-laws are taking turns when my parents feel home sick. Very soon when my daughter will start her daycare, my morning routine will get even more cramped, with the added pressure of leaving a crying child behind in the hands of strangers.

Maybe then I’ll keep a pair of jeans and a blazer in my office drawer! Kudos to my mom who used to drape a saree every day and drive her Luna (later Kinetic Honda) to her school while doing all the above activities, with not one but two kids!

I'm a marketing and business development professional, working with Flipkart in a Category management function. My previous stint was with a hospitality chain where I did extensive travelling and hope to do it again some day with my daughter! Got my education from IIM Kozhikode and NIFT Gandhinagar but I believe learning never stops. Currently juggling work and a toddler while trying to get the best out of both the endeavors. Still trying to figure out my true calling.
